Servicing Your Firearm

Firearms are intricate and sometimes sophisticated mechanical systems that contain moving parts and springs. The tolerance between these moving parts is often very small. Contact and moving surfaces require lubrication to reduce wear. Dirt, grime, moisture and other contaminates can find their way inside the firearm and cause many issues, such as accelerated wear, rust and parts failures. In modern firearms certain coatings are often used to reduce corrosion and wear.

Although most owners clean their firearms (barrel and exterior) after use the vast majority do not field strip or disassemble their firearms to clean and lubricate all of the parts. Full disassembly requires specialized tools which most people do not possess. I never recommend untrained people disassemble their firearms.

It is important that firearms, just like any other mechanical device, be disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and lubricated periodically. If you do not service your firearm, it will not function optimally.
